My Lex is leaving for college this year. As her mom, I’m a wreck about it and truly wish it weren’t happening because I want to keep her safe in my home where I can always take care of her. Another part of me is thrilled for her and can't wait to hear all about the new adventures she is going to have. So.....since I can't stop time or go with her, I at the very least want to empower her to be able to take care of her health while she is away as I would if she were home. My first goal is to keep her away from the Campus Health Center as much as possible . For us, this begins with the most unadulterated and uncontaminated essential oils from doTERRA, (quality matters here). Below you will find a list of the most suggested essential oils for college students.
I will be packing a diffuser for her to diffuse in her room to increase her immunity and focus while including roller bottles with diluted essential oils for her to use topically and on-the-go.
For college students especially, essential oils can be valuable allies in managing the stresses of academic life, promoting focus and concentration, and supporting overall well-being. Here are a few of the essential oils I’ll be sending Lex with:
On Guard: one of the bestselling essential oil blends because it naturally and effectively provides immune support, protects against environmental and seasonal threats, serves as a nontoxic surface cleaner, provides an energizing aroma and smells simply fantastic (which helps when in a dorm room where candles are prohibited and won't disrupt her endocrine system like smelly plug-ins will)!
Lavender oil: renowned for its calming and relaxing properties. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and promotes better sleep quality, which is crucial for college students dealing with academic pressures and irregular schedules. Just remember that a little does a lot, (because too much real lavender will have opposite effects and cause overstimulation). Several studies have shown that certain essential oils, such as lavender and bergamot, helps reduce stress and promote relaxation. In fact, a 2013 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that inhalation of lavender essential oil reduced stress and anxiety levels in participants before a stressful event while another in 2017 published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that inhaling lavender essential oil improved sleep quality and reduced symptoms of insomnia in participants.
Peppermint oil: one of my absolute favorites because it is invigorating and helps boost energy and focus. Inhaling peppermint oil decreases inflammation, supports head tension and enhances alertness and mental clarity, making it an excellent choice for long study sessions or when feeling fatigued.
Rosemary oil: known to improve memory retention and cognitive function. Diffusing rosemary during study sessions or using it as part of an aromatherapy blend helps enhance learning and concentration. Research has suggested that rosemary has positive effects on cognitive function and memory. A study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience in 2003 reported that exposure to rosemary essential oil led to improved cognitive performance and increased alertness in participants.
Lemon oil: has uplifting and refreshing properties, making it ideal for combating mental fatigue and enhancing mood. Its invigorating scent creates a positive and motivating atmosphere. Studies have even shown an increase in test scores when diffused!
Eucalyptus oil: beneficial for respiratory support. Inhaling its vapors clears the airways and improves focus, making it helpful during cold and flu seasons or when spending long hours in stuffy study environments.
Bergamot oil: has a unique citrusy and calming aroma. It helps reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a more relaxed and focused mindset while helping to increase confidence.
Frankincense oil: has grounding and centering properties valuable during times of uncertainty and stress. It's soothing scent eases nervousness and promotes a sense of inner peace, (who doesn’t need this?).
Chamomile oil: known for its gentle and calming effects aids in reducing tension and promoting relaxation, making it suitable for winding down before bedtime or managing stress during exams.
Cedarwood oil: has a warm and woody scent that helps promote a sense of stability and focus. It is beneficial for students facing distractions or seeking to improve concentration.
Ylang-ylang oil: has a sweet floral aroma that helps reduce stress and creates a calming atmosphere. It also aids in promoting better sleep quality.
Deep Blue Rub essential oil blend: soothes tired muscles and joints and uses essential oils with cooling and warming properties to naturally comfort problem areas, (a must-have for athletes).
With the right essential oils, college students can harness the power of nature to support their well-being and thrive academically. My family has been successfully using essential oils to support our health for over 8 years now. My Lex knows how to use essential oils safely and which to use for what ailment but even if she didn't, I would be comforted sending her with any and all of these essential oils because they are of the highest quality and have limited side effects.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you would like more information on empowering your college student!
